Overcoming Others

Overcoming Others

People are eternally divided into two classes: the believer, builder, and praiser; and the unbeliever, destroyer and critic.
—John Ruskin

When we talk about expectations, it’s usually about things that we expect from ourselves: being a kind person, achieving fabulous weight loss, having a good career, raising an upstanding family, and so on. But you don’t live alone in this world, so it’s natural that you would expect things from other people. Working as a team in the office towards a common goal, for example. Well-mannered children, perhaps. And you would certainly be in your right to hope for support from your family and friends whenever you need them—especially once you start your weight loss journey.

The problem arises when these people fail to meet your expectations. Spouses can seem indifferent, if not downright hostile, about your effort to improve yourself. Family and friends can scoff at your latest attempt at weight loss instead of lending an understanding ear. Just as bad, any of these people can make things worse for you if they keep overeating while you’re doing portion control.

The bottom line is that if there’s a wide gap between expectation and reality, you’ll probably just have to let go of those expectations. Other people, even those closest to you may not “get it” about this weight loss thing. If you establish that they don’t, don’t bother banging your head against a wall, or getting upset or frustrated. Instead, get on the boards, where you’ll find ample support from people who are on the same journey you are, and experiencing the same things you are. Call your counselor; that’s why he or she is there. And always keep in mind that you’re doing this first and foremost for you.

Think about this, too: when you’re doing great losing weight and learning for yourself about how to eat right, you’re actually setting an example for those around you (whether they like it or not). You may even inspire others to try to better themselves!

Did you ever “expect” that?
